About this Class:
Platform training is a relatively new type of training where a dog learns to position himself on a small platform as a home base to which he will quickly and eagerly return. Many basic behaviors can be taught and strengthened by using platforms. Dogs can learn to stay or wait more easily when asked to do so on a platform. Platforms can then be removed leaving the handler with a much stronger stay or wait in all situations. Similarly, getting a dog to keep his paws on the platform and not jump on people can help create jump-free greetings of strangers. By changing the position of the platform in relation to the handler, we can use platform training to strengthen good behaviors such as walking nicely on leash on either side of the person, and having a dog face his person and stay focused in increasingly distracting situations. Moreover, by placing the platform further away from the trainer, dogs can more easily learn to offer basic behaviors like sit and down at a distance. People who do sports with their dogs can use platforms to solidify basic skills and also improve their dog’s coordination. Prerequisite: completion of our basic manners or puppy class or, with instructor’s permission, other positive training.
