Canine Respiratory Illness Information

As you may have heard, local veterinarians have been reporting the presence of a number of cases of canine respiratory illness in the DC Metro area.  Symptoms might include a cough, runny nose, increased respiratory effort, lethargy, and lack of appetite.

Please note: All classes will continue as scheduled at Your Dog’s Friend (YDF). However, as an extra precaution to ensure the health and safety of all the dogs coming to the training center, we ask that you follow these simple guidelines:

What you can do:

  1. Bring your own water bowl, mat, and toys (if needed to distract or calm your dog).
  2. If your dog (or any other dogs in your home) show symptoms of a respiratory illness:

o    Do not come to class or puppy party.

o    Talk with your vet and get advice for treatment.

o    Email your instructor to let her know you won’t be in class.

o    Keep your dog/s at home and away from other dogs in group settings until your            vet gives you clearance to attend class.

  1. Avoid congregate settings such as daycare, boarding, and dog parks.

As always, we encourage you to discuss any questions you may have about this illness with your veterinarian.

We will monitor the situation and continue to do our best to provide a safe environment where your pup’s very important needs for playing, learning, and training can be fulfilled.  Please see the AVSAB position on the importance of puppy socialization.
